 Tips from a cardiologist for dealing with everyday stress

"We can't avoid stress, so  how we deal with it matters," says Dr. Fialkow.

Too much caffeine could be a factor. The American Heart Association (AHA) explains that consuming moderate amounts of caffeine (up to two 8-ounce cups of coffee) can help people feel less fatigued and more alert. But high doses of caffeine "can make people feel anxious, raise their blood pressure, and cause palpitations and sleep problems," the AHA adds. While coffee is the richest source of caffeine, keep in mind that  other drinks and snacks, such as tea, some soft drinks, chocolate, and energy drinks, also contain caffeine. 

"Caffeine is healthy and may be fine if you like it, but it tends to increase stress, anxiety, and physiological responses," says Dr. Fialkoff.

"Try to go to bed at the same time and  wake up at the same time. Avoid bright lights like computers or phones in bed. Try to develop good sleep habits, like keeping your room cool. This will help you deal with stress better." 

Many clinical studies have confirmed that a healthy lifestyle, including a healthy diet, weight management, and regular exercise, is beneficial in achieving and maintaining overall health  and reducing stress levels.  Regular exercise, such as brisk walking, can reduce stress, tension, anxiety, and depression and improve your quality of life, the AHA explains. "You may feel 'good' immediately after exercising. Over time, as exercise becomes a  part of your life, it may also improve your overall health," the AHA explains. 

Increasing your physical activity can reduce stress and make you feel more calm; improve your mood and help you think more clearly; help you lose weight  or maintain a healthy weight if you're overweight; and give you more energy and stamina. Physical fitness also helps lower  blood pressure; increases "good" HDL cholesterol levels and helps control blood sugar by improving how your body uses insulin. Increasing your activity can also improve the quality of your sleep. 

 "If you can anticipate a annoying circumstance, do things to soothe it," Dr. Fialkow incorporates. "Get prepared for it and anticipate the extend.
