Cognitive shuffling is a mental exercise that aims to  distract the mind, much like counting sheep. 

 While it helps reduce sleep-related anxiety for some, it can cause additional stress for others. 

Maintaining good sleep hygiene is more beneficial for overall sleep quality. 

 There are plenty of sleep hacks on TikTok that users say have changed their lives. . One of the most recent patterns picking up footing is "cognitive mixing."

One doctor  recently shared a video on TikTok explaining the technique, describing it as a "simple brain teaser" that improved his sleep. According to Ellen Wormter, FNP, DBSM, a nurse practitioner and behavioral sleep medicine specialist with the Better Sleep Council, the cognitive shuffle is a type of word game that helps you distract your mind and get to sleep. 

For some people, this can help reduce "performance anxiety" about how long it will take to fall asleep, Wormter told Very well. Others, however, find the practice stressful. 

"It becomes a problem when you start to worry about it," Wormter says. 

If you're having trouble getting enough sleep, it might be worth giving the cognitive shuffle a try. As long as you know when to stop if it's making you wake up instead of making you sleepy. How to Improve Your Sleep Efficiency 

How does cognitive blending work? 

There are many different practices for "cognitive blending," but the most common can be achieved in a few simple steps: 

  • Choose a random word and spell it out in your head. For example, I'll use the word "mask." 
  •  Visualize the first letter of  this word, which in this case would be "m."
  •  Make a mental list of all  other possible words  that start with this letter. In this case, you could list "merry," "mango," "money," "Monday," etc. 
  • Make a list of all the subsequent letters of the original word. In this case, it would be "a," "s," and "k." 


Why does organizing your thoughts help you fall asleep? 

Cognitive shuffling mimics what happens naturally  in your brain as you fall asleep: Your mind cycles through random thoughts, often without you being fully aware of it. 

The cognitive shuffle is similar to other techniques that don't require a lot of brain power, like counting sheep. But experts say you might need to practice it a few times to get the hang of it. 

And it doesn't work for everyone, says Dr. Alicia Roth,  a sleep specialist at the Cleveland Clinic Sleep Disorders Center.. "After all, we rest best when we're not applying ourselves. The more we 'sleeping effort', the harder it is to drop snoozing," she included. "My concern with methods like cognitive mixing is that it may increment rest exertion for a few individuals, conceivably making the circumstance more regrettable." 

Cognitive blending can also be difficult for people who have trouble visualizing and saying words  in their heads, such as: B. People with dyslexia. 

 

What other sleep hacks can you try? 

TikTok has popularized numerous sleep hacks, such as: B. Drink a "Sleepy Girl Mocktail" (sour cherry juice) and tape your mouth shut. While these tips may help, the most effective way to improve your sleep is to practice good sleep hygiene, such as avoiding large meals late at night and keeping your bedroom dark and cool. 

If you're having trouble falling asleep, try these tips:1 

  • Avoid caffeine in the evening 
  • rest for sleep and wake up at the same time 
  • Avoid nicotine 
  • Exercise early in the day 
  • Avoid drinking alcohol in the evening 
  • Eliminate distractions, such as TV noise and computer screen light, at least an hour before bedtime. 

As you work on your sleep habits, don't put too much pressure on yourself to make everything perfect.
