There may be more health benefits from drinking more water.
According to an analysis that was published online Nov. 25, 2024, by JAMA Network Open,
drinking six to eight cups of water each day can help prevent a variety of conditions, including migraines and kidney stones, as well as promote weight loss.
The aim of the 18 previous randomized clinical trials, which are considered to be the gold standard in research, was to evaluate the health effects of changing the amount of water consumed daily for four days to five years. Participants who increased their water intake were compared to those who maintained their previous intake. (Fluid intake from food and other beverages was not measured, so it was not included in their total.)
Drinking water to help lose weight and prevent kidney stones was supported by the strongest evidence. In a number of clinical trials, drinking about six cups a day was linked to weight loss, and drinking eight cups a day significantly reduced the risk of developing a second or subsequent kidney stone. Individual studies suggested that drinking more water helped control diabetes and low blood pressure, prevent migraines, and treat urinary tract infections.
