Clean eating, adequate sleep, and increased physical activity are all well-known ways to maintain health. All these are easier said than done. Food and exercise are just two aspects of healthy habits. They concern how we experience each moment. Saurabh Bothra, the Chief Executive Officer of Habuild—claimed to be India’s pioneering program for cultivating habits—stated that World Health Day serves as a chance to pause, contemplate, and realign with what truly matters: our health.
It's easy to get overwhelmed or stuck in a cycle of starting and stopping in a world filled with fitness fads and wellness advice.
The best advice from Bothra for developing long-lasting habits is as follows:
1. Build a system rather than relying on motivation; motivation is like a guest. It appears whenever it pleases. But systems stay. Don't just say, "I'll exercise when I feel like it," but instead make your habit a fixed thing. For instance, "I'll do five surya namaskars after brushing." This method, known as habit stacking, is extremely effective.
2. Make well-being effortless with visual prompts: We are creatures of sight. Desire to consume more fruits? Position them on the dining table rather than in the refrigerator. Wish to hydrate more? Place a water bottle near your workspace. A minor alteration in your visual environment influences your actions.
3. Micro is powerful: We frequently believe that big habits are required for impact. But science says the opposite. One minute of mindful breathing. Before lunch, take ten deep breaths. These small routines add up to big effects when practiced daily.
4. Instead of saying, "I want to start yoga," say, "I'm someone who does yoga." This will strengthen your identity rather than just your habits. Habits develop as identity shifts occur. Consistency is good for your brain. Therefore, when you believe you are in good health, your actions gradually begin to reflect that.
5. The majority of habit apps track steps or calories, but they also track joy. But ask yourself this: “What habit made me feel good today?” Cultivating health should evoke joy, not seem like a duty. The best way to build habits is to focus on the good things in life.
