Health Experts Warn Against Extreme Weight Loss

Medical Professionals Warn That Weight Reduction May Be More Detrimental Than Beneficial

what solution to achieving good health — and could actually worsen the situation?

An increasing number of medical professionals argue that the conventional emphasis on weight reduction misses crucial factors: lifestyle habits, overall well-being, and empathetic care. Most individuals find it challenging to maintain weight loss over time, and the emphasis on shrinking can foster stigma, anxiety, and potentially dangerous eating habits. Instead, specialists advocate for a movement towards evidence-based, individualized care that emphasizes health — rather than the digits on a scale.

Reevaluating Weight-Loss Objectives

Prioritizing solely weight reduction may inadvertently cause more harm than benefit, as indicated by a group of experts contributing to The BMJ. They contend that while losing weight is frequently regarded as the cornerstone of improved health, this perspective may be overly simplistic—and even misleading.

The majority of people with greater body weights are unlikely to maintain significant weight loss with lifestyle changes alone, according to Dr. Juan Franco and his colleagues. Simultaneously, attempts at weight loss can come with risks, including the possibility of perpetuating harmful weight stigma.

The researchers highlight that healthy behaviors, such as proper nutrition and regular exercise, are undoubtedly important. However, they also emphasize that body weight alone is not a dependable indicator of a person's overall health. They encourage physicians to concentrate on evidence-driven care that honors individual needs, aspirations, and well-being, regardless of a person’s size.

Exploring Lifestyle Constraints

For years, the standard method for battling obesity has involved calorie restriction and increased physical activity. However, recent research indicates these lifestyle changes seldom lead to sustainable weight loss. More critically, they have not shown efficacy in reducing heart attacks, strokes, or premature mortality.

This doesn’t imply that living healthily isn’t valuable—it truly is. Yet, by moving away from weight as the primary objective and instead emphasizing tailored, compassionate care, physicians may deliver improved support, enhance long-term health, and mitigate the stigma many patients endure.

Weight Prejudice & Emerging Paradigms

Focusing on weight loss could also exacerbate societal biases about weight, fostering negative perceptions, stereotypes, and judgments regarding individuals based on their weight, which can negatively impact mental health and  They claim that they contribute to bad habits and weight gain.

They note that recent clinical recommendations demonstrate the growing acknowledgment that weight is an insufficient measure of health, and alternative strategies, such as Health at Every Size (HAES), recognize that good health can be attained regardless of weight loss and have revealed promising outcomes in enhancing dietary behaviors.

While these methodologies warrant assessment in larger clinical studies, healthcare providers can draw insights from them to offer superior and empathetic care for patients with higher body weights, they recommend.

Towards Empathetic Care

“Medical professionals should be ready to inform individuals pursuing weight loss about the possible benefits and drawbacks of treatments while minimizing the risk of fostering eating disorders and long-term metabolic impacts,” they state. “Such a patient-focused approach is likely to yield improved care by aligning with patient preferences and situations while concurrently decreasing weight stigma.”

.They arrive to the following conclusion: "Healthcare recommendations about a healthy diet and regular exercise are still relevant because they may improve health outcomes." The primary objective is to provide quality care irrespective of weight, meaning not to care less but to engage in discussions about benefits, risks, and what truly matters to the patient.

River safety

On a warm day, it might seem appealing to cool off in natural waters. However, because of the numerous concealed hazards beneath the surface, it is highly advised to avoid going into the water.  Here are some safety pointers:

  •  Pay attention to warning and advisory signs – water conditions can fluctuate rapidly
  •  Swim parallel to the shoreline, rather than away from it, and avoid being swept away by currents
  •  Exit the water immediately if you start feeling cold
  • Alcohol and swimming should never be combined
  •  When walking or jogging, stay clear of the water's edge and maintain distance from individuals not in your household while supervising children at all times
  •  Refrain from using airbeds in open waters where they may drift into deeper areas and become unstable
  • Enter the water only in areas with adequate rescue gear and supervision.
  •  Wear appropriate safety gear – for example, life jackets or helmets while canoeing
  •  Do not jump or dive into natural waters unless you are confident about the depth and the absence of submerged risks
  • Acquiring knowledge in first aid, rescue, and resuscitation techniques could potentially save a life
  • Always keep children under close supervision of a responsible adult, ensuring small children remain within arm's reach. HEALTH AND SUPPLEMENTS

5 Smart Ways to Boost Nutrition & Activity in Child Care

Five Strategies for Implementing Nutrition and Physical Activity Professional Development in Child Care Programs

Across the country, 88 percent of parents emphasize that nutritious meals and physical activity are very important factors in their choice of child care providers. Acknowledging this, Georgia's Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL) initiated an endorsement program through its Quality Rating and Improvement System (QRIS) aimed at enhancing nutrition and physical activity (N&PA) in child care facilities. This effort equipped a selection of high-caliber child care programs with training, technical guidance, and financial support for health-oriented enhancements.

An evaluation conducted by Child Trends revealed that centers involved in the DECAL N&PA Endorsement experienced significant advancements in N&PA best practices, such as preparing healthier meals, boosting physical fitness classes, and enhancing health-focused family engagement activities. Furthermore, many center administrators applied and intended to maintain changes such as garden installations, testing new foods, and adding new play equipment. Administrators believed the endorsement elevated the overall quality of their programs, fostered healthier behaviors among staff and children, improved family engagement, and bolstered programs' confidence for upcoming QRIS evaluations.

To assist programs in other regions in building off Georgia's success, we present five essential recommendations for state leaders, implementation and technical support partners, and community health practitioners on launching comparable N&PA Endorsement programs effectively.

1. Make use of the national training programs that are currently in place and provide opportunities for both in-person and online instruction.

To provide high-quality training and enhance efficiency, DECAL effectively utilized established training programs such as Go NAPSACC, an online assessment and training module designed to enhance N&PA practices and policies, as well as the Physical exercise Learning Sessions (PALS), which provide instruction on the most effective ways to incorporate physical exercise into childcare environments.  A major accomplishment of DECAL’s N&PA Endorsement initiative was its hybrid model, which included both in-person (PALS) and online training. Participants in the N&PA Endorsement valued the in-person training for fostering connection, deeper engagement, and practical learning, while appreciating the flexibility offered by the online format. Other states and communities contemplating similar N&PA projects should consider implementing established and validated local or national N&PA training courses that can be conducted both in-person and virtually to enhance engagement and participation from child care program staff.

2. Provide financial support and personalized assistance to participating child care programs.

DECAL allocated funding to each participating child care center to promote N&PA practices and offered access to relevant technical aid. Participants in the N&PA Endorsement reported that the funding was particularly beneficial as it allowed them to acquire resources and supplies necessary for N&PA activities they had previously been unable to afford. Smaller, locally owned centers appreciated that the tailored technical assistance gave them personalized support to enhance their program’s quality and increase its appeal to potential families. Based on these observations, Child Trends suggests that other N&PA initiatives incorporate funding and customized technical support for child care programs, as these resources empower programs to advance N&PA practices, gain essential resources, and uplift program quality and marketability.

3. Ensure your N&PA initiative can adapt to child care programs with diverse levels of readiness and ability.

By providing targeted support based on each child care program’s level of preparedness and capacity to effect N&PA changes, an N&PA Endorsement program can be suitable for all child care providers. In the case of DECAL’s Endorsement, some programs were already familiar with N&PA practices and knew how to enhance them (e.g., some had ongoing partnerships with local farmers), while others had previously been part of N&PA training programs; as a result, staff from the latter felt more at ease implementing changes to N&PA practices. These programs possessed a foundation from which to further develop N&PA practices and policies, whereas other child care facilities had to contemplate expanding their N&PA practices for the first time due to the Endorsement. To cater to the diverse needs of programs, DECAL selected training programs adaptable to centers’ backgrounds and experiences (e.g., Go NAPSACC), offered multiple training formats to accommodate various learning styles (e.g., online and in-person), and provided program-specific technical support to address inquiries and requirements. For other states and communities contemplating similar N&PA initiatives, we advise crafting flexible, scalable models that consider varying levels of readiness and operational capacity within child care programs.

4 Clarify how your N&PA initiative corresponds with other statutes, guidelines, and suggestions for child care programs.

Various federal, state, and local authorities regulate child care initiatives with differing statutes, guidelines, and suggestions associated with N&PA, such as state licensing, QRIS, and the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). As programs involved in the DECAL N&PA Endorsement made enhancements—like establishing gardens, natural play areas, and new playground equipment—some center administrators found it difficult to ensure that the enhancements adhered to all relevant statutes. To avoid inadvertent infractions and facilitate seamless implementation of N&PA practices, clarify expectations for achieving program enhancements. This generally entails collaboration with various agencies that support and oversee child care to guarantee that all parties concur on optimal practices. Coordinators can collaborate with technical support providers, licensing officials, and quality coaches to establish consensus on optimal practices, ensuring their guidance helps programs remain compliant with relevant statutes and regulations.

5 Enhance internal organizational capabilities and guarantee adequate personnel to back enduring N&PA modifications.

As a major state agency, DECAL recognized the significance of possessing internal knowledge and expertise concerning N&PA. For instance, DECAL acknowledged the necessity for staff with the ability and proficiency to offer ongoing support as child care programs rolled out new strategies for implementation.  HEALTH & SUPPLEMENTS

Healthy Routines for Busy Lives

Enhance your wellness with these everyday practices

Staying active

Making time for regular exercise might improve your wellbeing.

Prioritizing health is vital, yet often life interferes, leading individuals to adopt a reactive stance instead of a proactive one toward their wellness. But leading a healthier lifestyle does not have to be difficult. . In fact, studies indicate that minor, constructive shifts in daily activities can cultivate a healthier individual over time.

According to an April 2024 Hologic-Gallup survey on women's health, 63 percent of respondents said it was difficult to prioritize their health. They highlighted feelings of being overwhelmed, the need to prioritize others' needs over their own, mental and emotional health challenges, and professional obligations as significant obstacles to health focus. Yet, it is crucial for both men and women to understand that even small adjustments can yield substantial results. These healthy practices can empower individuals to embrace healthier lifestyles.

• Engage in physical exercise. Regularly participating in physical activities is among the most significant actions one can undertake for their health. Exercise aids in managing weight, lowers the risk of illnesses, fortifies bones and muscles, and enhances cognitive function. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends adults target at least 150 minutes (30 minutes daily for five days) of moderate aerobic activity weekly. A fantastic starting point is a daily stroll, a straightforward and effective practice that doesn’t demand much time or equipment aside from a decent pair of athletic shoes.

• Apply sunscreen daily. After cleansing your face each morning, use a facial moisturizer with at least SPF 30, or mix equal amounts of sunscreen and regular moisturizer, as advised by Harvard Health. Cover the cheeks, neck, ears, and any areas of the scalp that are thinning. . Skin cancer is the most prevalent form of the disease globally, and utilizing sunscreen can aid many in preventing it.

• Enjoy outdoor time. Just a few minutes in the sunlight can elevate vitamin D levels. Vitamin D is essential for bone and heart health and helps lift mood, according to WebMD. Numerous studies suggest that spending time in verdant environments fosters tranquility and enhances happiness.

• Organize your meals. Meal planning serves not only as a method to oversee food expenditures but also as an excellent approach to being more conscious of food selections while steering clear of impulsive purchases or less nutritious meals. Incorporating more plant-based foods into your diet is an excellent starting point. Such foods can mitigate the risk of chronic issues like high cholesterol and hypertension.

• Maintain hydration. Staying hydrated supports proper digestion, boosts energy, and may enhance cognitive performance, states Harvard Health. Start each day with a glass of water and drink it during every meal. Older adults often experience a diminished sensation of thirst compared to their younger years, making it particularly important for seniors to keep hydrated.

Establishing healthy habits becomes more achievable when individuals start small and commit daily to prioritizing their health. HEALTH AND SUPPLEMENTS

Build Muscle, Boost Health: The Secret to a Stronger You

How to Elevate Your Health Through Strength Training

Cardio vs. Strength Training: Which Is ...

Resistance workouts, including weightlifting, offer numerous health advantages.

What comes to mind when you consider strength training? The image of barbells and weight plates — the substantial gear of gym-goers who lift heavy — likely appears first.

.However, resistance training, also referred to as strength training, is just one method of muscle growth. . The truth is, you don’t need to heft weights to enhance your strength. There are various other exercise methods available to you, including options that require absolutely NO equipment.

Let’s delve into the specifics with exercise physiologist Katie Lawton, MEd, and athletic trainer Tom Iannetta, ATC, CSCS.

What is strength training?

Katie Lawton, MEd, explains how you can incorporate strength training into your exercise regimen.

Strength training is a form of physical activity where your muscles work against some kind of resistance. This action “loads” the muscles by necessitating that they overcome, counter, or manage an opposing force.

Consider the classic example of performing a bench press:

  •  You overcome a force (concentric contraction) when you raise the weight.
  • You counter a force while holding the weight at the apex of the press (isometric contraction).
  • You manage a force while lowering the weight (eccentric contraction).

.According to Lawton, "you are giving your muscles a stimulus to engage at every stage." “As you proceed, your muscles gain strength and adapt to the demands you’re imposing on them.”

Conversely, neglecting strength-enhancing activities can be detrimental. Without regular muscle engagement, they typically lose mass and become weaker, particularly as time progresses.

Types of strength training

Health and fitness recommendations usually advise committing two sessions weekly to total-body strength training. (This can also be distributed over multiple days, focusing on specialized workouts for your upper and lower body.)

Sessions of strength training usually last between thirty to an hour.. Here’s how you can utilize that timeframe.

Free weights

It’s obvious: lifting heavy objects fosters muscle growth. A free-weight session might involve challenging your upper and lower body with gear such as:

  • Barbells
  • Dumbbells
  • Kettlebells
  • Medicine balls

Stabilizing free weights while you maneuver them throughout your workout imposes additional demands on your muscles and involves more muscle groups. “You reap significant rewards from free weights,” remarks Lawton.

Weightlifting machines

Weightlifting machines are made up of wheel, lever, and pulley systems that help you lift weights. They effectively apply engineering principles to assist you in moving weights during your workout.

This mechanization allows you to lift without the worry of the instability that can arise when trying to steady free weights.

“Using weightlifting machines may present a safer option for those initiating a weight training regimen,”

So, are weightlifting machines superior, inferior, or equal to free weights? This topic is a significant point of contention in the fitness community. The bottom line? Research indicates both have their merits, and the decision often hinges on personal preference.

Resistance bands

Don’t let their appearance fool you; resistance bands can effectively engage your muscles, mirroring the effects of free weights or machines and delivering comparable strength gains, all while being gentler on your joints.

Compared to other strength-training tools, resistance bands are more reasonably priced, portable, and adaptable.

Body weight exercises

You don't need any gear for a strength-training workout — just your own body. Body weight exercises use your mass and gravity as resistance to enhance strength.

Compared to other strength-training tools, resistance bands are more reasonably priced, portable, and adaptable.

  • Push-ups
  • Burpees
  • Planks
  • Wall squats
  • Lunges

“Body weight exercises might appear straightforward, yet they can exercise your muscles quite rigorously,” explains Lawton. “Small-scale studies suggest they can yield benefits comparable to traditional weight lifting.”

Suspension training is another form of body weight exercise, although it requires a set of straps and other equipment to elevate you off the ground.

Benefits of strength training

Regardless of the strength training method you choose, your body will experience advantages. Here are 10 ways it enhances your health, strength, and overall ability to navigate the physical challenges of daily living.

Bodyweight exercises that fall under the category of strength training include the following examples:

Weight control: Increased muscle mass elevates your metabolism and daily caloric expenditure. The reason? Muscle burns more calories than other body tissues, even when you’re sedentary.

Enhances stability: Strengthening your core and lower body provides you with a more stable foundation, helping you maintain your balance and posture.

Strengthens bones: Weight-bearing activities encourage the growth of tissue that enhances bone strength, which can guard against osteoporosis and bone breaks.

Sharp. Clear. Focused. Evidence-based support for your mind

practices this while still in bed, but you can certainly do it while sitting up,

This approach can trigger comprehensive mindfulness. Consider it a morning assessment of your physical self—where do you feel discomfort? Breathe into those areas. Where do you feel tight or rigid? Breathe again.

Not only can deliberate breathwork aid in alleviating mental and physical strain, but the practice may also enhance concentration: A 2018 study published in the journal Consciousness and Cognition1 indicated that breath-centered yoga improved the attention span among participants.

So, if you struggle with concentration, try this mindful breathing technique first thing in the morning; you could also complement that practice with a focus- and memory-enhancing supplement, if you choose.

3.Examine your vision board

Lastly, to boost your happiness, take a moment to observe your vision board. If you already possess one, wonderful! If not, here's our detailed guide on creating vision boards and utilizing them.

Essentially, "By continuously presenting these images to your mind, you’re conditioning it to not only notice but also seize the opportunities that will bring you closer to your desires," . Even better, view those images as soon as you wake up: "There’s a psychological phenomenon known as the Tetris effect2, which indicates that the last thing you look at before sleeping leaves a strong impression on your subconscious compared to anything else during the day," she elaborates.  In order to make my physical action board the first thing I see in the morning and the last thing I see at night, I keep it next to my bed.

Heat-Smart Travel Tips

Guidelines to Keep in Mind for a Healthy Summer Trip

As summer approaches, numerous residents of Colorado might be gearing up for a getaway. While some opt for a staycation, 86% of Americans intend to travel beyond state lines, and 50% are eyeing international destinations.

Everyone wishes for their journey to unfold seamlessly, yet over 25% of Americans report experiencing illness or injury while on vacation, with 56% requiring medical assistance as a result. To ensure a healthy and secure trip, keep these pointers in mind:

Consult with your primary care physician before embarking on your journey. Arrange an appointment with your doctor before your trip. Discuss your trip schedule with them during your visit to find out how to stay healthy while traveling, including any required or suggested vaccinations.  Before departing, renew any prescriptions you may need during your travels and bring enough to last for your entire trip. Review travel health information and recent health alerts for international destinations to prepare for what awaits you.

If you haven’t undergone a yearly wellness check and preventive screenings lately, now might be a suitable time to address any health issues. Health plans typically cover preventive care, meaning you might incur no out-of-pocket expenses for specific covered preventive services by visiting a network provider.

You might also explore options such as virtual consultations for non-urgent care.   Discuss with your health plan and physician about the availability of virtual care while traveling. Virtual services can assist you in swiftly and affordably obtaining necessary care from a network provider on the go. TRY THIS

Pack wisely and ensure you have ample necessities. Before you leave home, check the forecast for your destination and pack accordingly. Create a travel health kit filled with must-haves like hand sanitizer, non-prescription medications, sunscreen, and insect repellent. In the event of an emergency or misplaced checked luggage, do not forget to include essentials like prescription drugs in your carry-on luggage.

Prioritize your health during your getaway. Engaging in physical activity can help alleviate stress and enhance well-being. Plan to integrate some form of exercise into your trip, such as walking tours, cycling excursions, or daytime hikes. To prevent dehydration, carry a water bottle and keep it filled throughout the day. Additionally, remember to apply and reapply sunscreen to protect your skin and use insect repellent to guard against bites.

Be ready for potential jet lag. Research indicates that between 60 and 70 percent of long-distance travelers may suffer from some degree of jet lag.  Adjusting to time changes and ensuring sufficient rest before traveling can help lessen jet lag symptoms. Be sure to stay hydrated. Upon arrival, bask in the sunlight as it can aid in resetting your internal clock, promoting better sleep, which is vital in reducing jet lag and boosting your immune system.

Consider obtaining travel medical insurance and protection. Accidents can occur, making it essential to be ready for the unforeseen. This includes ensuring you have health coverage during your travels, which can help you dodge significant expenses in case of accidents or sudden health issues. If you plan to venture away, check with your health insurer to confirm what coverage you have at your destination — particularly for international travel, as many health plans may not include medical expenses abroad.

These guidelines can assist you in maintaining your health so you can relish your vacation without worry and return home recharged. Health and supplements
